April Summary

Overdue, but, it’s been a busy few weeks. Also: I had a dream last night/this morning involving a man wearing denims printed with red roses (the man looked like the effeminate guy in the BBC television show about a department store) and my cat Rajah chomping on an iguana. If anyone can figure the meaning of those images out, please advise.

What went down in April:

  • Rejiggered planning and organization system. Using the Book of Done methodology that I deployed a few years ago with moderate success. I’ve added one more tweak to this methodology that’s really ramped production up a notch and allowed a decent variety of tasks from week to week. Pleased about that.
  • Had some good 1:1 meetings with at least three people regarding public K-12 education in Philadelphia recently. Attended a roundtable hosted by the UPenn Graduate School of Education to discuss the proposed dissolution of the Philadelphia School District and eventual privatization of ballpark half of it. Realized that I do not have the temperament to deal with fighting these kinds of systemic battles. Many years ago, when I was Executive Director of an education nonprofit, I realized that although I had the chops for education management, I really preferred to be in the classroom. My current thinking is to focus my involvement and volunteerism related to education in a very direct service capacity, e.g. mentoring.
  • The creative nonfiction writing is in a quasi holding pattern, though I have some strong possibilities that are currently composting, and I finished reading an inspiring essay by Virginia Woolf that I suspect will sneak into a future piece in some manner.
  • The basement has been officially pimped out with a ten foot long dining table and twelve feet of bookshelves. I need to work on some room dividers and some nighttime window dressing but as for now, the basement is officially the international headquarters for The Institute for Advanced Awesome.
  • Rajah had to have surgery due to his ingesting the elasticized string that helps clamp a chicken to a spit in my rotisserie oven. The kid almost died! 11 perforations in his guts which were oozing internally. He is still on the mend but based on his waking me up at 5:20 this morning with yelping galore from his convalescent room upstairs, he is already back to his old self.
  • Great DinnerGrrls.org dinner with some ladies I’d never met before (one I’d met briefly at a Coffee & Capital thing at the Quorum; one I’d emailed with a bit regarding a coworking space in South Philly; one I remember seeing at civic meetings in our nabe). Looking forward to the next one in September. I may just have it be another potluck at my place. Though I might not opt to make rotisserie chicken this time …
  • Did not do much (any?) yoga but did purchase a bike last weekend and took it for a 16 mile ride (sweet).
  • On hold with the YES pile. Have an idea for its next iteration. But am staying focused on my current big idea.
  • Did participate in Philly Clean Up Day, which was a good time to catch up with my block captain.
  • Did participate in Philly Startup Weekend. My team ended up fetching second place. Not too shabby. If you’re curious about how we’re making fiscal fitness fun fast and free, google Credit Cardio and see what comes up.
  • Did not anticipate the energy drain (in a good way) that Startup Weekend would be, so, did not participate in the Art of Living meditation weekend. I’m not sure that I will participate in another, to be honest. I sort of like my practice the way it is.

May’s in full swing. The summary report by August, I promise.

Results, Not Activity

Lots of thoughts but it’s my lunch break and I want to make this snappy. Will do my best to combine concision with coherence.

I have not compiled a March report because I do not think that I will. Just as the act of observation changes the behavior of the observed, having numerical goals was beginning to make me anxious. More specifically, I realized this morning that most of my goals were the worst kind of goals: they were of the clock in/face time/run the baseline variety. As in: serve your community X hours; go yogging for Y hours. Not: produce A, B and C by date D.

Fortunately April is the month that brings us the Thai New Year, so this month I get to scrap all the old goals and use months 1-3 to inform not only the what of what I’m looking to achieve but also the when. I know that I really want to work on a project to educate the people in my neighborhood regarding their public and private education options (distinct from my livelihood, which involves enabling people around the entire world to find and select appropriate graduate school programs). So there’s that. I know that I want to compose and complete four distinct creative nonfiction pieces and really start firing them out there to literary magazines. I know that I want to get me and my house-mate’s basement pimped out so that it’s useable as a make-stuff zone, and I want to get our third floor television room equally hooked up so that I can watch the Sixers amazing 2012-2013 season in full blossoming wide screen high definition glory (as much as watching them on a tv that is as deep as it is wide continues to be satisfying).

And I know I want to take care of me and my loved ones, which means eating healthfully and purchasing cat toys in bulk and occasionally making this definitely-getting-older bum walk around and get my yog and my yoga on now and again.

Fortunately, today I received my April 2012-March 2013 Planner Pad. As much as I love the Astrology Zone calendar for ensuring that my activities align with my natural energy levels and stuff involving the moon, Mercury, and my ruling planets (like, duh), it’s not particularly convenient to haul around an 18″x24″ thingamabob and the layout of aforementioned thingamabob does not argue for achievement but instead encourages running the baseline.

What I need to figure out is what to do regarding DinnerGrrls.org and the YES pile. There are ways to deploy these burgeoning projects towards marketing civic engagement and community involvement to the people. But I need to figure out if those projects are simply distractions-from-self. I do not have the answer to that.

ANY FRIGGIN WHO

Here’s a few things that are on my radar:

  • Full moon on Friday. Aiming to hit up a Russian spa and get my hot tub on.
  • Philly Cleanup Day is 4/14. I’m going to get my sweep on for my little block of Passyunk Square.
  • Philly Startup Weekend is 4/20-4/22. Excited to help out other Philly-area idea engines in any way that I can. Am going to float the idea of a crowd-sourced credit and finance education tool that I’ve wanted to build for years now to help all of us build our credit cardio.
  • Tire Fire reading on 4/25
  • Art of Living meditation 101 weekend is 4/27-4/30

Word to your moms, and happy Thai New Year!

February: B

January was a B-; let’s see how February ended up. Not particularly optimistic about this since I was down for the count for about a week with a progressive cold/flu thing.

1. Love
(a) 52 dishes; 6 dates

According to my records I only tried three new recipes.

  1. Vegetarian chili
  2. Potato and corn chowder (vegetarian)
  3. Corn muffins (made with the sludge leftover from juicing) (vegetarian)

Even months, the date-planning is not my problem, so no worries on that front.

GRADE: 75%; C

(b) Work out 100 hours

I worked out a measly two hours and 35 minutes in February and am 10.2% to my goal of 100 hours for the year. I’m pacing to 62 hours and 11 minutes, or 62.2% to goal.

62.2%; D-

(c) Take an Art of Living refresher

I am definitely planning on registering for the refresher at the end of April.

Overall LOVE grade: 68.6%; D+

2. Strengthen sangha
(a) Start DinnerGrrls.org in Philly

Mildly promoted the kickoff dinner (scheduled for March 22nd!)

100%; A+

(b) Cheerlead with the YES pile

Recommended weekly YES to-dos each week in February via the YES pile‘s Facebook page (17 fans, up from 14!). Also tweeted via the YES pile’s twitter (83 followers, up from 58 — a 43% lift). Also rebuilt the website and started a soft hassle of American Apparel, which owes my company emeritus for services rendered in January 2009 so that my company emeritus can pay the remaining balance of tYp design work.

100%; A+

(c) 40 hours of community service

I helped out two hours and 45 minutes in February and am 9.5% to my goal of 40 hours for the year. I’m pacing to 23 hours and 10 minutes, or 58% to goal.

58%; F

Overall STRENGTHEN SANGHA grade: 86%; B

3. Create!
(a) Finish and submit one essay

DONE! And totally submitted that thing.

100%; A+

(b) Third floor bookshelf!

Met with painter. Received initial estimate. Awaiting revised estimate based on revise colors and specifications (e.g., cancelling the magnetic wall part based on friends’ input and suggestions)

(c) Love Every Kind Of Cat – Actively in progress.

Overall CREATE grade: 100%; A+

Thus:

Overall FEBRUARY grade: 84.9%; B

Phew; not as bad as I thought it might be — and actually an improvement on the balance vis a vis January! Though, wow, less than three hours at the gym … that’s just despicable.

January: B-

Let’s see how I’m tracking to my 2012 goals.

1. Love
(a) 52 dishes; 12 dates

Tried five new recipes!

  1. Spicy lentil soup (vegan)
  2. Borscht (vegan)
  3. Beet carrot orange juice (vegan)
  4. Baked potatoes (vegan)
  5. Blueberry waffles

Also went out on a date to Raw Sushi. I’m thinking it makes more sense for me to only plan six dates, so I’m changing my 2012 goal on that front, with the expectation that my date plan the other six.

GRADE: 100%; A+

(b) Work out 100 hours

I worked out seven hours and 36 minutes in January and am 7.6% to my goal of 100 hours for the year. I’m pacing to 89 hours and 48 minutes, or 89.8% to goal.

89.8%; B+

(c) Take an Art of Living refresher

The refresher course they offered conflicted with a familial obligation, but they’ve got one scheduled for late April so I’ll definitely attend that one!

Overall LOVE grade: 94.9%; A

2. Strengthen sangha
(a) Start DinnerGrrls.org in Philly

Kickoff dinner scheduled for March 22nd!

100%; A+

(b) Cheerlead with the YES pile

Recommended weekly YES to-dos 4 out of 5 weeks in January via the YES pile‘s Facebook page (14 fans!). Also tweeted via the YES pile’s twitter (58 followers!).

80%; B-

(c) 40 hours of community service

I helped out one hour and three minutes in January and am 2.6% to my goal of 40 hours for the year. I’m pacing to 12 hours and 24 minutes, or 31% to goal.

31%; F

Overall STRENGTHEN SANGHA grade: 70.3%; C-

3. Create!
(a) Finish and submit one essay – Actively in progress.

(b) Third floor bookshelf! – Ditto. Paint color selected.

(c) Love Every Kind Of Cat – Actively in progress.

Overall CREATE grade: On course!

Since there are no tangible outputs yet on the creation front, there’s no numerical grade and that doesn’t factor in to my calculations. Thus:

Overall JANUARY grade: 82.6%; B-

Next steps for February:

Ramp up:

  • More community service and engagement!
  • Diligently research and promote weekly to-dos for the YES pile
  • Ramp up the workouts
  • Register for Art of Living April class

Keep it up:

  • Promote DinnerGrrls.org kickoff
  • Keep up the good work on the recipe-trying front
  • Continue work on essay
  • Continue work on third floor bookshelf
  • Continue loving every kind of cat

Crank it down:

  • Reduce “dates” goal from 12 to 6

Another Cycle

Status

I got sick a couple of weeks ago and my workouts sort of fell off. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. In any event, I recumbently bicycled while making even more edits on my essay-in-progress (which, after soliciting the advice of a professional editor, has become an entirely new essay).

Majorly behind for the first time this year!

50 minutes, pacing to 95 hours/95%, 6% to goal of 100 hours working out

Slow Cooker Baked Potatoes

Status

I had no idea that I could bake potatoes in a slow cooker, but according to the booklet that came with mine, I totally can. Stick your punctured taters into the slow cooker, being sure they don’t touch the sides. Stack ‘em all pyramid-style. Crank on high for five hours or low for eight to nine hours.

These babies came out super moist and lovely. My housemate, who was mocking me for making such a “starchy, low nutrition” food in bulk, ended up eating TWO as soon as they were ready.

(4/52)

Beet Carrot Orange Juice

Since I had extra beets leftover from making borscht, I decide to break in the new juicer (plucked off my registry by one of my college suitemates … MWAH!!!) and follow one of the Breville booklet recipes!

The one I selected involved three peeled medium beets, two peeled carrots, and four oranges. I think the carrots need to be peeled in order to open up the juices.

Anyway, the juice was delicious!

However, the soup I attempted to make with the beet roughage was basically gruel. Need to figure out how to make the juicing leftovers tastily useful. Suggestions welcome!

(3/52)

Vegan Borscht

I made a delicious bucket o’ borscht which happens to be vegan. One step involves removing the tomato skin, which I thought might be unnecessary.

I consulted with someone who knows more than me about these things, and he concurred that tomato skin removal is not necessary. Which is good, since that’s where the nutrients live!

I also finally figured how to deploy my Cuisinart effectively: when a recipe calls for grating beets. I used a cheese grater for the first third of the process, but then stuck ‘em through the Cuisinart and phew! So much easier.

I used the recipe for Lana’s Borscht originally printed in Departures magazine. It’s really quite yummy, even if you forget to add the juice of half a lemon.

(Of course: if you add the sour cream dollop then this recipe becomes merely vegetarian.)

(2/52)

Phys Ed

Status

Phys Ed at Sweat is fun albeit stinky. Yes, armpits, I’m talkin’ ’bout you. I came up with an idea for a hoodie after the workout: the back would be emblazoned with PINK-style lettering reading ALL THIS AND CAMELTOE TOO. (Is cameltoe two words?)

Before the class I did some warmup on the recumbent bike while editing an essay-thing I’ve been working on.

78 minutes, pacing to 144 hours/144%, 4% to goal of 100 hours of working out
